Masala Mishri Foods family story
01 Where it all began
THE BEGINNING

Good food was never meant to be wasted.

For years, our family was associated with a kirana store, and food was very much a part of our everyday life.

While making sev puri, some of the puris would occasionally fold or curl during production. They were perfectly edible, but no longer quite what they were intended to be.

Our mother could never bring herself to discard good food. She would collect these folded puris in a jar, prepare a simple blend of chat masala and spices at home, sprinkle it over them and serve them with tea.

It was never intended to be a product. It was simply something our family enjoyed.

01
THE LITTLE JAR

Until a customer tasted it.

He loved it. And what began as a humble household snack eventually became our Mathri.

When the kirana store eventually closed as times changed, we found ourselves at a new beginning. We had to start afresh—and that little jar of folded puris gave us our first opportunity to do so.

MASALA MISHRI Since the beginning
THE FIRST BIG TEST

One order. One unexpected lesson.

Our first significant order came from a Punjabi satsang. We were delighted to receive it, and equally disappointed when we discovered that almost 30% of the Mathri had broken in transit.

Yet the response from customers was remarkable. They loved the product, came back with further enquiries and placed repeat orders.

Their appreciation gave us an early indication that there was something worth building here.

A problem that became an opportunity.

DETAILS MATTER
BEHIND THE PACK

The details customers may never see.

If someone was willing to trust us with an order, we wanted to do everything reasonably possible to ensure that it reached them in good condition.

We studied how other brands packaged fragile snacks, researched different approaches and, despite working with a modest budget, found a packaging format that offered a better solution.

We then adapted it further and had it custom-made for our requirements—to minimise breakage while helping preserve freshness without relying on chemical preservatives.

OUR BELIEF The details that a customer may never see are often the details worth paying attention to.
02

Curiosity became our way forward.

As we grew, our curiosity naturally extended beyond packaging and into the food itself.

INSPIRED BY FAMILY

Sometimes, the best ideas come from children.

Our Jowari Papad Mixture was inspired by our six-year-old. He had developed his own rather inventive way of eating: taking jowar flakes, crushing a papad into them, adding some sev or boondi and mixing everything together.

Sometimes he would have it alongside dal and rice; sometimes simply by itself.

THE QUESTION Could this simple combination become something of its own?

OUR APPROACH

Some millet is better than no millet at all.

We do not approach this with the intention of turning every snack into a health product. We simply believe in finding enjoyable ways to introduce something a little more thoughtful into foods people already love.

01

Kachori

Millet-based mixes incorporated into the coating.

02

Chakli

Creating crunch while experimenting with millet.

03

Bhakarwadi

A familiar favourite with a more thoughtful twist.

04

Everyday Snacks

Small improvements that don't compromise character.

MAKHANA MIXTURE
EXPERIMENTATION

A lighter mix, naturally colourful.

Our Makhana Mixture emerged from the same spirit of experimentation.

We wanted to create a lighter, more interesting combination of roasted ingredients, brought together with our palak sev and beetroot sev.

Rather than relying on added colours, we chose to let the ingredients themselves bring their natural colour and character to the mix.

NO ARTIFICIAL COLOUR STORY Let the ingredients speak for themselves.
BEHIND THE PROCESS

If oil doesn't need to remain, we would rather not have it there.

01

Frying

Traditional frying naturally introduces oil into products such as sev and boondi.

02

Additional Step

We introduced specially designed equipment to drain excess oil immediately after frying.

03

Crispness

The additional step also helps the namkeen retain its crispness over time.

WHY WE DO IT

We do not do this to recover oil or reduce costs. It is an additional effort undertaken for one simple reason:

If oil does not need to remain in the snack, we would rather not have it there.
FROM MUMBAI

A little taste of home, thousands of miles away.

Many of our customers overseas receive our products through friends and family travelling from India.

Often, these are not everyday purchases. They are little reminders of home—brought across borders with affection and enjoyed slowly.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE

Because distance changes everything.

For some products travelling long distances, we have introduced oxygen absorbers as an additional measure to help preserve freshness.

It is a small redundancy, but one we are happy to build in when it can help someone enjoy the product closer to the way it was intended.

AND SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY...

Masala + Mishri

Masala for the savouries with which our journey began. Mishri for the sweetness that came later.

MASALA MISHRI FOODS
OUR SIMPLEST BENCHMARK

If we would not be comfortable serving it to our own family, we would not be comfortable serving it to yours.

We began with a kirana store, a jar of folded puris and a mother's refusal to waste good food.

What came after has been built one experiment, one improvement, one packet and one customer at a time.

We are grateful for how far that little beginning has travelled.

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

Plenty still left to learn.

And we are looking forward to seeing where it takes us next.
